No Beating About The Bush ... Two Sides Of An E-divide

Sydney Morning Herald

Thursday March 22, 2001

The first comprehensive report on Internet service providers from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has found a handful of large companies dominate the access market.

A survey of 718 ISPs found home subscriptions grew 11 per cent in the September 2000 quarter to 3.4 million, while business or Government accounts jumped 14 per cent to 432,000.

Eight ISPs with more than 100,000 subscribers held 60 per cent of the market. The city/bush divide was stark, with only 1.4 per cent of subscribers in remote regions, compared with 75 per cent in capital cities.

Of the 101,235 business and government Web sites, only 3.7per cent offered secure transactions.
